Haven Hospice welcomes Stavius Powell as the chaplain for Jacksonville patients and families. Powell joins Haven after spending 18 months working with Baptist Medical Center, first as an intern before going on to become the resident chaplain. Originally from Dallas, Texas, Powell relocated several times before finally settling down in Jacksonville in 1998 and joined Haven in July.

“So far it has been great. I have had the opportunity to work with people as they prepare for this transition. It has been equally rewarding to work with the families as well,” said Powell of his time working at Haven. “Most of all, it is just about being able to support people and providing compassion and a pastoral presence.”

Powell earned his master’s of divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia, in 2005. He is currently the pastor at Philippi Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville where he has served for the last four years.

“I had the opportunity to do hospital work as the resident chaplain at Baptist Medical Center, but I was interested in exploring other avenues,” said Powell of his decision to join Haven. “I wanted to get involved in providing comfort and care at the end of life and found Haven to be very appealing.”

When Powell is not in the office, he likes to spend his time sampling the local Jacksonville cuisine with his wife of 10 years, Markeisha, and three children Tatyiana, Tiffany and Tyson. He also enjoys playing golf, gaming and spending time reading to his children.
