“I started volunteering with Haven because I believed it was time to pay it forward,” said Sam Williams of her decision to volunteer with Haven Hospice. “I have the time and the ability to be able to sit with patients, interact with them and just listen to them.”
Sam joined the Haven team approximately 18 months ago as a patient caregiver volunteer who socializes with patients and families offering her time as needed.
“I was a licensed nurse practitioner for a long time and started the bridge program to become a registered nurse but that’s when my Muscular Dystrophy started to take effect,” said Sam who is originally from Ohio but grew up in Pahokee, Florida, before relocating to Gainesville 25 years ago. “After that, I became a telemetry nurse, which means I would sit with patients and monitor their vitals. The work I do volunteering with Haven was a pretty easy transition from that.”
“The people and the staff at Haven are wonderful, and I really enjoy spending time with the patients,” said Sam. “Volunteering has been a rewarding experience for me, and I have really enjoyed it.”
